Since I've went with Disqus (I did it on my BE blog too) the spam went down quite a bit. I still get the occasional spam comment, but disqus notifies me via email and I can delete it by replying with “Delete” in the email and Disqus takes care of it for me. I dont have to log into my blog at all. I do it all through email.

WordPress + DISQUS is great stuff. So little hassle compared to everything else I've tried. And updated much more frequently too. And it has one-click updates for both the core and plugins. There's very little reason to run something else.
