TCCC 5 Interview on You Tube

by Donn Felker 16. November 2008 15:16

Back at the Twin Cities Code Camp I was interviewed by Jason Bock. He decided to post the interview on You Tube. If you want to hear me ramble on for almost 4 minutes you can do so by clicking the picture below. We go over my talk and some of my history of working at McFarlane Toys. Enjoy!

Speaking at Twin Cities Developers Guild

by Donn Felker 6. November 2008 04:33

Its kind of last minute but I'll be speaking at the Twin Cities Developers Guild next Tuesday, November 11th. The meeting is located at New Horizons in Edina, MN. The exact address is: 4510 West 77th Street, Suite 210, Edina, MN 55435

Here's a Map:

Map image

Session Summary: Learn about how the Dependency Inversion Principle (DIP), Dependency Injection and Inversion of Control Containers help you get your system under test more effectively and how it can help you decouple your code. You will also be introduced to a small subset of dependency breaking techniques that will help you break ground into setting your system up for maintainability. This session is intended to be very audience interactive so that it can help the audience break into the world of dependency inversion and introduce methods that will help you gain confidence when you need to make a change in your code base.

See you there.

Twin Cities Code Camp Presentation and Code

by Donn Felker 13. October 2008 03:41

As I promised, here is the full source and presentation for this weekends presentation at the Twin Cities Code Camp.

The talk was entitled:

Smooth Operator: Using the Workflow Rules Engine within WCF

Ever changing business logic requires rule systems that are flexible to business demands. The majority of the time the business requires that these rules systems must be consumable by other applications. Come see how we can utilize the Rules Engine within Windows Workflow Foundation to evaluate our rules and simplify our rules configuration. We will then encompass this functionality within a Windows Communication Foundation Service which will enable consumers to utilize the service.

Download the Code Here (7.75 MB)

Download the Presentation (337kb)

A big thanks to Jason Bock for setting up such a successful code camp. Be sure to check out the Twin Cities Code Camp web site for new event information. The event is moving to a LARGER location in April 2009!

The Twin Cities Give Camp

by Donn Felker 12. August 2008 19:13

SpoonAndCherry I’ve presented at code camps and given presentations to technical audiences and institutes and I will continue to do so. I have a passion for giving back to the community that has helped me become the what I am today. I’ve decided that I want to give back to the community even further. After doing some research to find someone (or a group) who might already be setting up a Give Camp I’ve come to the conclusion that they don’t exist here in the Twin Cities.

Therefore, I’ve decided to start up the Twin Cities Give Camp (site not complete). The web site is www.twincitiesgivecamp.org.

I’ll be updating the site this week with all relevant info in regards to the Give Camp. No dates have been set, but as soon as we have one the site will be updated.

What is a Give Camp?

A Give Camp is a weekend-long event where software developers, designers, and database administrators donate their time to create custom software for non-profit organizations. This custom software could be a new web site for the nonprofit organization, a small data-collection application to keep track of members, or a application for the Red Cross that automatically emails a blood donor three months after they’ve donated blood to remind them that they are now eligible to donate again. The only limitation is that the project should be scoped to be able to be completed in a weekend.

At the Give Camp, there is an expectation of “What Happens at Give Camp, Stays at Give Camp”. Therefore, all source code must be turned over to the charities at the end of the weekend (developers cannot ask for payment) and the charities are responsible for maintaining the code moving forward (charities cannot expect the developers to maintain the codebase).

More in depth info can be found here: www.givecamp.org

Do you want to be a part of this awesome experience?

We are in need of volunteers, developers, designers, DBA’s, volunteers, Project Managers, Charities, Prizes, Giveaways, sponsors and more volunteers. If you would like to participate or sponsor this event, please let me know. I will update this blog as soon as www.twincitiesgivecamp.org is updated. I will be in contact with the local PMI, IIBA, and ISSA, AITP and local .NET User Groups.

More info to come soon!

Resources from Desert Code Camp

by Donn Felker 3. June 2008 04:10

This past weekend I presented the topic "Intro to Dependency Injection and Inversion of Control" at the Phoenix Desert Code Camp. A big thank you goes out to everyone who attended. It was such a popular topic that it actually moved up to the largest room in the conference location, the Theater at UAT! Thanks again everyone!

At the bottom of this post are the resources from this presentation.

Resolution from Error During the Presentation

For those of you were present when I ran into an issue with this "DynamicMethod" error, I have figured out the issue. It's a bug in Unity. It looks like its been fixed and should be available in the next release.

I was able to work around this issue by moving the Dependency attribute into the Interface. I have updated the code in the download below to reflect this.
